Nest box Curtains

Having a plain coop is boring. I've made it my mission this year to dress it up a little bit for the girls.. give them and us something nice to look at. We started last fall by adding in a roost outside for them and some logs in a corner to hold in the ash from our woodstove so they would have their own little area for dust bathing. This year it's nest box curtains and other various things that I can come up with.

I started by measuring each hole in my coop. I have 4 holes for about 10 hens. I cut a piece of fabric for each side of a hole and then hemmed the sides so that they wouldn't fray on me. I didn't get fancy because as much as I love our chickens, they're chickens and they're going to get them dirty anyway.
After I was finished, I found some ribbon that I had laying around and had been wanting to use for a long time. It's not every day you can find ribbon with roosters on them!

It was easy to staple the curtains in place and then pin them back with the ribbon. I even had one in there that was laying an egg, and another one that thought she was going to be sneaky and go broody.
I had a surprise waiting for me when I finished.
Eek! Sorry! Lay on..
Buffy the sneaky broody

What (if anything!) have you done to brighten up your coop??

  1. I have ten chickens, and I think that your curtains are adorable. I certainly haven't gone this far--some days we're lucky if they actually lay in their nest boxes, even with the ceramic egg I planted in there. Maybe with some curtains, my ladies will find it more suitable!!
